If I had to describe health care today in one word, it would be frustration.

After over a decade in practice, we kept seeing the same things over and over. We tried to get people to make basic lifestyle changes but many were not interested in that; they just wanted the quick fix.

So we decided to dig deeper.

What was the cause of the things we were seeing?

It was clearly not just the chiropractic “subluxation.” We were adjusting people regularly and we kept seeing the same things showing up.

When that happens, we, as doctors, tend to look for another technique to try and address some element of care we think is missing.

“Maybe this technique that addresses soft tissue release will do it.” Or “maybe this new tool or device is the answer.”

But we don’t need more tools, we need to ask better questions.

What is causing the pain?

What is causing the subluxation itself?

What is the ROOT CAUSE?

We started to do the second thing all doctors do and that is to dig deeper into the research.

Our research kept leading us to the same place-STRESS.

The physiological, biochemical, neurologic pathways started to explain it all.

When we are under stress or exposed to stressors, our bodies go through a series of compensatory actions that can be tracked and explain the problems we were finding and the symptoms patients were experiencing.

The more we learned about stress and it’s various pathways, the more we started to understand the ROOT CAUSE.

We are all stuck in survival mode.

Survival mode is your brains default position.

We are built to look for potential danger. To store fat in case of lack of food. Look at life negatively in order to be prepared for any potential calamity.

That puts our brain and body into a state of sympathetic readiness at any given moment. We refer to this response as “fight or flight.” You’ve all heard of this.

The problem is not that we respond with fight or flight, the problem is when we engage that part of our nervous system too much, too often.

The worst part is that it doesn’t even have to be real. Just thinking of stressful situations, even if they are completely made up, will engage it. That’s because your brain can’t tell the difference between real and imagined stress; potentially super cool or super crappy. Depends how you use it. ;-)

What did we do with this knowledge?

We did some research. I guess we did a lot of research… to discover the source but that didn’t help us find a solution.

Our next lesson would be that learning about something and then thinking about something, does NOT change anything.

In order to change something, you have to bias towards ACTION.

YOU MUST ACT.

YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

So we started building; building a solution that could help everyone.
